Mark Temme and Stephanie Shideler repeat as Beach to Bay Champions!

As many of us know, Mark Temme and Stephanie Shideler are quite the determined competitors. They each proved it again as they repeated as Champions at Saturday, July 28th’s second annual Beach to Bay Classic, benefiting the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, The Tommy Brull Foundation, The Danny Bobis Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Long Beach HS Surf Team.

Facing perhaps the toughest conditions of the summer, Temme, Shideler and 42 other competitors headed into the teeth of a consistent 15-20 knot headwind on the 7 mile paddle from Rockaway to Long Beach. Temme set the pace for the 14′ SUP class racers coming in at a remarkable 1:28:01, besting 2nd and third place finishers William Grant and Matt Caines. Shideler’s 1:44:28 in the women’s division outpaced impressive second and third place performances by Donna Vedrin and Rachael Novack.

Perhaps even more remarkable was the performance put in by Gary Francis, who assessed the conditions and strategically dropped to the 12’6″ SUP class. His strategy paid off in the second fastest time of all SUP racers in any class, finishing in an astounding 1:30:50, finishing ahead of the 12’6″ class Long Beach 10 Miler Champion JP Foschi, with a strong third place going to Scott Lewis.

Of course with strong headwinds, everyone expected the Prone paddlers to have the advantage, and indeed they did. Michael Connor posted the fastest time of the day at 1:17:32, besting Justin Schwartz and Michael Moran.

The day ended with an outstanding finish line afterparty with food provided by Swingbelly’s and drinks supplied by our finish line hosts, Justin Schwartz and Stephanie Shideler. Despite the difficult conditions, there were smiles and congratulations all around by the competitors. What will be for 2013? No one knows, but all were in agreement: No headwinds, please!

The World Champion is OUR Champion! Congrats to Jamie Mitchell on taking the Long Beach 10 Miler Paddle Crown!

The 2012 WPA National Long Beach 10 Miler is in the books, and the 10 Time World Champion Jamie Mitchell is OUR champion! Jamie along with 59 other competitors entered the ocean at 11am sharp on Saturday, July 14th, 2012 in front of Long Beach’s world famous Allegria Hotel for the inaugural contest, which looks certain to become an annual NYSea Surf Week tradition in Long Beach, NY. The contest was held to benefit 4 local charities and organizations: The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation, The Tommy Brull Foundation and Camp Anchor, The Danny Bobis Memorial Scholarship Fund and The Long Beach High School Surf Team.

Setting a blistering pace on an overcast day with consistent 12-15 knot headwinds on the ocean leg, Jamie finished in a remarkable 1:48.04 in the 14′ class, besting local legend and world class competitor Mark Temme’s 1:55.47, with Scott Bradley finishing third at 1:58.29

In the hotly contested Prone Division, Thomas O’Neill made it back to back wins, coming in at 1:49.57 to take home wins on consecutive weekends, after scorching the competition at The Uncle Richie Farrell MS Classic in Breezy Point on July 7th. Second and third place went to Michael Connor and Justin Schwartz.

In another consecutive weekend blitz, Stephanie Shideler added yet another title to her ever growing impressive resume with a win in the Women’s division. Like Thomas, she also raced in and won her division at the Uncle Richie Farrell MS Classic. Stephanie’s time of 2:08.55 bested second and third place finishers Mary Sheerer and Donna Vedrin for the win.

J.P. Foschi took home the gold in the 12’6″ Mens Division in a remarkable 2:09.53, outpacing Taylor Jones and J.M. Kostallas in the highly competitive, packed division.

Despite the difficult wind conditions at the start, there was not a single no-show for the event, which actually started 15 minutes ahead of schedule! All but one of the place winners was able to stay for the Afterparty and awards ceremony at Pops Seafood Shack and Grill, including our Champion, Jamie Mitchell, who when asked if he’d be returning next year to defend his crown, responded in his typical modest, Aussie style, “We’ll see, Mate!”. We certainly hope so, and on behalf of our charities, we most definitely thank Jamie, all of the competitors and our sponsors for participating!
